  • From Canvas to Code: The Rise of AI Art in Indian Home Decor

Imagine walking into your living room and being greeted by a mesmerizing, swirling galaxy on the wall or a mythical creature standing guard at your entrance. What once seemed like a dream is now becoming a reality in Indian homes, thanks to the rise of AI art. In a country with a profound artistic legacy, the incorporation of AI into home decor is adding a refreshing and exciting dimension.

A Fusion of Tradition & Technology

India’s artistic heritage is incredibly rich, featuring the intricate Mughal miniatures and the vibrant, rustic charm of Warli paintings. Today, AI art tools enable homeowners to blend these cherished traditions with cutting-edge technology seamlessly. Picture a Mughal emperor portrayed with a futuristic twist or a Warli hunt scene reimagined with a neon color palette. The fusion of tradition and modernity opens up endless possibilities for home decor.

When I first encountered AI art, I was skeptical. Could a machine truly capture the essence of our rich cultural heritage? My doubts vanished when I tried it myself. Using a popular AI art platform, I uploaded an old photograph of a traditional Indian dancer. The AI transformed it into a stunning piece that combined the traditional elements with modern aesthetics. It was a perfect blend of old and new, resonating with my cultural pride and contemporary taste.

    Personalization & Accessibility

One of the most compelling aspects of AI art is its ability to personalize. Gone are the days when your decor options were limited to what was available in the market. With AI art platforms, you can create highly personalized pieces that reflect your unique taste and cultural preferences. Just pen down your imagination in simple text or upload reference images, and the AI algorithms generate unique artworks tailored to your vision.

I remember wanting a piece that represented my hometown’s spirit but couldn’t find anything that felt right. I turned to an AI art platform and input keywords like “rural India,” “festive,” and “vibrant.” The result was a breathtaking artwork that perfectly captured the essence of my hometown’s annual festival. It was like having a piece of home right in my living room, making the space truly mine.

    Beyond the Aesthetics

AI art is not just about creating visually appealing pieces; it’s about forging a deeper connection with our cultural roots. Imagine an AI-generated depiction of a deity from Hindu mythology or a scene from the epic Ramayana. These pieces are more than just decor; they are conversation starters, sparking discussions about our cultural heritage and fostering a deeper appreciation for our traditions.

I recall a family gathering where a new piece of AI-generated art became the evening’s highlight. It depicted a modern interpretation of the goddess Saraswati, blending traditional & contemporary elements. The piece sparked an engaging conversation among family members about the evolution of art and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage in innovative ways.

Embracing AI Art in Everyday Decor

Incorporating AI art into your home decor doesn’t have to be daunting. Start small with a few accent pieces and gradually build your collection. Here are some tips to get started:

    1. Choose a Theme: Decide on a theme that resonates with you. It could be anything from traditional Indian folklore to a more abstract, modern style.
    2. Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to mix AI-generated art with traditional pieces. The contrast can create a unique and visually appealing aesthetic.
    3. Experiment with Colors: Use the AI’s ability to play with colors to your advantage. Try different color palettes to see what complements your existing decor.
    4. Rotate Your Collection: One of the advantages of AI art is the ease with which you can generate new pieces. Rotate your art periodically to keep your space fresh and exciting.

The Role of AI in Reviving Traditional Art Forms

AI art is not just about creating new styles; it’s also about reviving traditional art forms that may have been forgotten. Many traditional Indian art forms, like Gond, Madhubani and so on, are seeing a resurgence through AI platforms. By feeding these traditional styles into the AI, artists and enthusiasts can generate new interpretations and keep these art forms alive.

I had a personal experience with this when I tried to create an Gond artwork. The AI-generated piece beautifully captured the patterns and vibrant colors characteristic of Gonda, but with a modern twist. It was a delightful blend of the old and the new, ensuring that the traditional art form continues to be appreciated in contemporary settings.

  • Five Productivity tips for Artists

Overlooking the obvious is more common than you might think.

A lot of artists, including myself, have a tendency to ignore few basics even if we know them to have a substantial impact.  Seems too vague? So go ahead and read what I am talking about  :

    The 5- minute rule

If it takes less than five minutes to do something then do it straight away. This can save you a lot of trouble/discomfort in the long run.

Eg –  Have you ever had a wonderful idea and you wrote it down on your phone or on a scrap piece of paper and now you are looking for it but can’t find it? Next time you go fetch your diary and write it down. All ideas in one place. It will take less than 5 minutes and you know how valuable new ideas are, right?

    Fun fact :

This also helps to put an end to procrastination or fear of starting something new.  The 5-minute rule is used as a technique in cognitive behavioural therapy. In this technique, you do whatever you may avoid generally, but try it for five minutes only. If after five minutes you are unable to continue, you can stop. However, studies have shown that most people continue even after five minutes till the task is complete.

    Clean your workspace

Reducing clutter at the end of the day can increase your productivity. If you clean up at night then you walk into your office in the morning with a fresh area. This gives a good feeling at the beginning of the day.

Cleaning up at the beginning of the day might not be a very good idea as you might lose crucial productive hours of the day doing that.

    Tip:

Find the time slot during your work hours when you are less productive and use that to organize things a little. This will leave you with less mess when you close your shop.

    Fix spots for your supplies

Sometimes searching for supplies, that elusive pen or some particular artwork may make you quite irritable.

I have had one such incident when I lost a white pencil and I spent three days looking for it turning everything upside down in the process.

To avoid this, you can fix a spot for your supplies and follow the first and the second rule to keep it like that. You will be surprised that how efficient his system works out to be. Dumping stuff here and there creates visual clutter and might affect you in the long run. Nobody likes mess, even if it’s them who made it.

    Take regular breaks

Blink your eyes, rest your hands and neck regularly. Your physical well-being is very important and small adjustments to your posture or screen time make sure you can always keep on working to your full potential.

    Spend time learning new things

For your regular growth as an artist keep attending workshops and classes by your favourite artists. It will help you immensely in improving your skills plus there is always something new to learn in terms of technique, work ethic i.e. how an artist approaches their work.

You can pick artists from any area of your interest. It is very important to keep growing as an individual .

For example, I attend basic level workshops for medium and artform which pique my curiosity. Most of the time I don’t necessarily pursue them further but they offer a refreshing break. Eg, Calligraphy and bullet journalling are two things I don’t do but I keep exploring around them as they interest me.

So these are some of the basics that I have to constantly remind myself in my day to day life as an artist. I hope you found this helpful.

Go ahead and find your favourites which you want to be reminded of on a regular basis.

  • Work-life balance for artists

Being able to work without interruption is a luxury and all of us try to get the most out of this opportunity. At times, in this process, we tip the balance between our work and daily life.

I currently have the bandwidth to dedicate more hours to my creative work and my duties towards my family are at a minimum.  Being a full-time artist for two years now, I feel it’s an appropriate time to share with you how I’m trying to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

Although I started writing this post for artists, the steps apply to most individuals, irrespective of the nature of their work.

Work-life balance to me is dividing your time and energy for activities related to your personal and professional life.

Having a work-life balance gets a lot of attention, but achieving /maintaining it can be tricky, especially for people pursuing their passion as their line of work.

Passion towards one’s work can lead to overworking. Eventually, it can even affect/ lower your creativity leading to burnout.

Don’t get me wrong though, pursuing your lifelong interest as a career is immensely satisfying. However, even if you love your work, you have to treat it as a profession by making boundaries.

Most days, I really enjoy working long hours, seven days a week. But the overall quality of my day-to-day life makes me want to balance things a little.

I am still making a lot of progress at work, making or creating what I want but the lack of a work-life balance has started affecting my overall well-being. I feel accomplished but exhausted by the end of the day.

So what do you do when you feel burned out? Maybe take a vacation?

At least in my case, once I come back from a vacation, I end up overworking to compensate for lost days. If you are like me, the method of taking a break might not work as a long-term solution.

So I will share with you five simple steps I have been following to improve my daily life –

Step 1 –  Accepting the need for balance

Balance means making choices and enjoying those choices.- Betsy Jacobson

Loving your work doesn’t mean you have to feel guilty about devoting time to other activities. Simple tasks which are part of your day provide a much-needed break. Making meals, finishing odd jobs or spending time with your family or friends can help you feel more fulfilled.

Allowing yourself to enjoy your hobbies also fuels your creativity. You can read more about it here.

A beautiful quote to sums it up:

Balance is not better time management, but better boundary management.

Step 2 – Make boundaries, make a workspace

If you are working from home, it’s essential to separate your workspace. Working from the comfort of the bed might not be great in the longer run. Your workspace can be just a plain table and a chair at any spot in your house. Dedicated space will help you to keep a tab on your work hours and make you more productive.

Step 3 – Fix your work hours

It helps a lot to fix the number of hours you are at work. There is no restriction on the time you want to allot for your creative work, it is totally up to you.

Fixed working hours can help you go back to your day-to-day life without feeling guilty. Your mind will get used to the fact that once you wrap up, you will not return until the next day.

Your productivity might not be at its best when you implement this step, but routines can be helpful.

You can choose to divide your work hours into a couple of slots based on your comfort level. But, remember, even flexible work hours have to be defined.

Step 4 – Enjoy, unplug yourself after work hours

A little structure in your work life can work wonders. Without having to compromise your productivity, you can take better care of yourself.

Once you fix the work hours, you will have the rest of the time for yourself. You can use it to help your family or do all kinds of activities which you enjoy. Cook meals, read books, spend time with your loved ones, even get a new hobby.

Do consider reading: Do artists also need a hobby?

Tip -You can keep a small diary within your reach for those new ideas which strike you at random times. Write these ideas down and build on them during your work hours.

Step 5 – Implement and Improvise

In today’s fast-paced life, maintaining a healthy balance can take a lot of effort. It’s possible that you will not get any work done for a couple of days/ weeks when you try to break into a new schedule.

It might take time to figure out the kind of balance that works best for you but it is worth it. Hopefully, the steps I’ve shared can help you figure out your own happy routine.

I will end this post with a quote I read in the book “Keep Going” by Austin Kleon

When you don’t have much time, a routine helps you make the little time you have count. When you have all the time in the world, a routine helps you make sure you don’t waste it ”
